This is an email I sent today to some of my colleagues. It is here out of context but could be of interest nevertheless.

Greetings from Bangalore airport, which is a quite uncomfortable place as there are no airline lounges and the crowds are filling up a small waiting area. Unfortunately all outbound flights from here to the "West" depart after 1 am......

DEAL and KETI

At the 7th AOS workshop Prabakhar presented the implementation of AGROVOC into the DEAL (Digital Ecosystem for Agricultural Lifelihoods) Application and the Kethi Environment to create local versions of AGROVOC. This is a good showcase of the use of the thesaurus outside the traditional library environment.
The thesaurus browser has been installed on village information systems and has been very well received.

AOS Workshop at AFITA 2006

The 7th AOS workshop is a big success. It is unquestionable one of the best session of AFITA 2006. We have always between 25 and 40 participants (overall more than 46 people participated) in the workshop and the level of the presentations is really high. Participants came from India, China, Thailand, Japan, Sri Lanka, France, USA and FAO. 15 out of 16 presentations were given. The very positive side this time was the lifely discussion. Often presenters were also interrupted with questions.

ECOTERM Meeting at FAO in Rome

The Ecoterm meeting 2006 took place at FAO and was co-organized by Margherita Sini from my Group

First Conference on Digital Libraries and the Semantic Web

I am in the Programm Committee of this interesting conference that tries to bridge the Digital Library and Semantic Web Communities in India. My group will present two papers at the meeting.

Verfasser des Vorwortes zu einem Ontologiebuch in Chinesisch

Prof. Ping Quian from the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science asked me to write a preface to his book on Agricultural Ontologies. The book has been published under ISBN:7-80167-917-2. My preface was published in English. A copy is attached

Mapping of AGROVOC to the Chinese Agricultural Thesaurus

My group got a grant from a specific program of FAO a for a joint project between FAO and the Chinese Accademy of Agricultural Science. Within this project AGROVOC will be mapped to the Chinese Agricultural Thesaurus. The lead of the project is with FAO in Rome. In Beijig a team of expert is established to do the mapping. Goal is to get deeper access to Chinese agricultural resources and to give better possibilities for Chinese speakers to access FAOs information.

This is a major achievement in the construction of the Agricultural Ontology Service
