Bildungsstreik

In Germany High School Students and University students are on strike. Well, some of them. At the moment it really does not look like a mass movement :-).
Reasons: what I got from the radio stations, the university students are protesting against the introduction of university fees and against the "Bologna Reforms" which introduced the split of German University curricula into Bachelor and Master Courses. The High School Students are protesting against too big classes and the shortening of the secondary schooling from 9 years to 8 years.

Volksluxus ("luxury for the people")

This was a marvellous spring day! So I used the sunset hours for a walk through my neigbourhood "SO36". SO36 is the name of one of the most famous clubs in the area, but it is also used to indicate this part of Kreuzberg. Well, I crossed the border several times, the border between "Mitte" und "Kreuzberg", the border between what was until 20 years ago Berlin? Wild West and the eastern part behind the wall.

Time for Science to Reclaim Its Progressive Roots

Jonathan Moreno and Rick Weiss have published a collection of essays from "science progress" that will be published soon (http://www.scienceprogress.org/2009/03/science-next-excerpt/)

I would like to cite some of the most significant  passages from the introduction:

"One of the things we love about science is that it is nothing if not argumentative. Both as a way of thinking and as a wellspring of novel ideas and products, science is a tumultuous truth-seeking process and even further, we contend, a revolutionary force for human liberation.

Osnabruecker Heimatabend

The French Government

Sarkozy has called into his cabinet Bernard Kouchner and Rachida Dati  (see attached article from the Spiegel on Ms Dati).  Why did no government of the left or centre/left in Europa in the last years had the courage to call personalities like them into the government?   Yes, there is Emma Bonino with Prodi, but..........

Protesting against George W or for the USA?

In the occasion of George Ws visit to Rome the entire left went to the streets to demonstrate against the America President. Obviously neither a visit of Mr. Putin nor of Mr. Ahmadinejad nor of Mr. Omar al-Bashir would have triggered a similar reaction. The ideological status of the left is painful and embarrassing. But I felt also embarrassed by Marco Panella's idea to organize a counter demonstration to support the USA. Couldn't we get a free, indipendent, not subaltern but admiring position regarding the European offspring on the other side of the Atlantic?
